The internet has been abuzz over the last several weeks, with news that Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx, is the youngest woman to make Forbes’ list of billionaires. Those who have followed her journey, like myself, know the story: In 2000, when she was just 27 years of age, Blakely started out with just $5,000 and an idea. Fast forward to 2012, and she now has an extremely successful and profitable brand.

But Spanx isn’t the only successful brand worth noting. Blakely, herself, has become a standout brand.

Bethenny Frankel and Skinnygirl — What Makes a Successful Brand Extension

My first experience with Bethenny Frankel was in 2008,  when The Real Housewives of New York City first aired on Bravo. She reminded me of my own girlfriends — fun, ambitious, and outspoken. I quickly became a fan.

So when Skinnygirl Cocktails launched in 2009, I was quick to get onboard. With Frankel being the ultimate health-conscious “girl’s girl”, a the low-calorie margarita line geared toward women seemed like the perfect extension of her brand. And from a marketing perspective, the product stood out by miles in a spirits industry that was heavily skewed toward men.

Dear One Million Moms: Better Luck Next Time

Last week, One Million Moms, a questionable online project focused on “ending exploitation of children by media”, came out against JCPenney on their website and Facebook page for hiring Ellen DeGeneres as its’ newest spokesperson. Their reasoning:

By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years.

Well, it’s clear that this group learned nothing from the Susan G. Komen debacle from earlier this month. But just like in that instance, the people have spoken yet again — through sites including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, to name a few — and made it known that they will not tolerate bullies.
